Risk assessment -Determine if the animal is mobile or incapacitated
Observe surroundings for any other animals or danger.
Correct PPE gear -hi-visibility vest,protective gloves.
Public perception & dealing with the public – making sure public are safe and well away from any danger minimum 100m in both directions if possible and ensure animal will be dealt with accordingly and discretely.
Approach – access the animals condition it may be deceased or just stunned and may move away if not approached carefully.
Correct equipment – a large cover or similar may be used to cover the animal and surrounding area use discretion in whatever method is determined to dispatch the animal ideally a small calibre rifle or shotgun also a decent sharp knife to help in the dispatch process.
Irish law relating to this topic – humane dispatch can be preformed by anyone as it is a necessity (with the proper equipment )on protected and non protected animals on the roadside or otherwise -it’s the grey area of the discharge of a firearm on public road that is illegal as it cannot legally be discharged unless 18m from the centre of the road.
Correct training of use & maintenance of a legally held captive bolt -this will be provided by the course provider on the day for all participants and is an essential part of any for device to operate properly.
Legal disposal of carcasses – personal use , disposal by county council or persons may decide to remove the animal themselves which they entitled to do unless it is a farm or domestic animal.
Correct use of road signage – stop and remove public and traffic to a safe distance use appropriate signage to ensure that no one approaches.
Suitable calibers for dispatch if firearm is required outside of 18 metres of the centre of a public road – small calibre up to a .22 magnum or shot gun is recommended if the animal is somewhat mobile therefore all previous precautions must be adhered to.
We now work with NPWS Coillte and the Gardai we are the first working group of its kind in the country and are country wide
All of our volunteers are trained in the laws and procedures in relation to this area particularly the humane bolt which takes the use of firearms away from the roadside and general public
We also work in conjunction with local vets and wildlife agencies and groups which helps provide advice and assistance where necessary
