If you find a fawn.
What should I do if I find a fawn?
Irish Deer Society’s Code of Practice
Under no circumstances should you touch the fawn, unless there are visible signs of injury or sickness. Most species of deer give birth between May and July. This is why it is more common to find hidden young deer in the Spring.
Approach with caution and check for the mother as she may be close by and agitated. She may sound an alert by means of a high pitched chirp or start stamping. Deer are naturally cautious of humans and the only thing stopping her returning to her young is the presence of people.
If you are satisfied that there is no mother close by, contact a relevant deer organisation or veterinary practice for assistance ie. NPWS, Irish Deer Society, WDAI, etc.
Do not pick the fawn up under any circumstances, unless you are advised otherwise, and wait for a response and help from your point of contact.
Many thanks,
